Melanin and the ecology of southern pine beetle associated fungi

چکیده

I report here a series of initial investigations into effects of melanins on the interactions of the three primary species of fungi associated with the southern pine beetle (SPB), and into possible means for mitigating the damaging activities of the melanistic fungus, Ophiostoma minus. Growth of the SPB mutualistic fungus Entomocorticium sp. A on high melanin medium was less than half of the growth on control medium. Growth of 0. ranaculosum was not significantly affected by the addition of melanin to malt extract agar. Four species of biological control (of bluestain) fungi showed the ability to decolorize melanistic 0. minus cultures to various extents.

Effects of available water on growth and competition of southern pine beetle associated fungi.

Competitive, interactions among bark beetle associated fungi are potentially influenced by abiotic factors. Water potential, in particular, undergoes marked changes over the course of beetle colonization of tree hosts. To investigate the impact of water potential on competition among three southern pine beetle associated fungi, Ophiostoma minus, Entomocorticium sp. A and Ceratocystiopsis ranacu...

MOLECULAR ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTION Characterization of Gut-Associated Bacteria in Larvae and Adults of the Southern Pine Beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann

We report the Þrst study of gut-associated bacteria of bark beetles using both culturedependent and culture-independent methods. These insects are major pests of pine trees but also contribute to important ecological functions such as nutrient cycling. We found members of the and -Proteobacteria and Firmicutes in larvae of the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann. Sequences f...

POPULATION ECOLOGY Seasonal Dynamics of Mites and Fungi and Their Interaction with Southern Pine Beetle

We evaluated whether Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann populations were inßuenced by nontrophic interactions involving commensal mites, their mutualistic bluestain fungus Ophiostoma minus (Hedgc.) H. and P. Sydow, and beetle-mutualistic mycangial fungi. We tested for effects of delayed, nonlinear, or positive feedback fromO. minus and mites onD. frontalis population growth. We predicted that (1...

Nutritional and pathogenic fungi associated with the pine engraver beetle trigger comparable defenses in Scots pine.

Conifer bark beetles are often associated with fungal complexes whose components have different ecological roles. Some associated species are nutritionally obligate fungi, serving as nourishment to the larvae, whereas others are pathogenic blue-stain fungi known to be involved in the interaction with host defenses. In this study we characterized the local and systemic defense responses of Scots...
